The Video Game Consultancy where your game gets the treatment that it deserves!.
The Powell Group is a dedicated team of video game consultants that help your company and game reach its potential.
The client, a non-profit association of interactive digital media professionals that provides training and economic development to new media businesses and freelancers, contracted TPG to provide business development support for the 2014 Game Developers Conference. The overarching goals were to increase awareness of the strong development community, as well as facilitate introductions to key players within the games industry, including publishers, consultant groups, and potential funding sources. TPG specifically committed to booking 40 one-on-one meetings with quality publishers and meeting partners and 10+ industry attendees at private business development dinner sponsored by the client.
The team faced multiple challenges as we worked on this project. The first and most pressing, was that very few real demos or asset kits were available from the development teams to show business partners. In addition, these teams were relatively “young” in the industry, resulting in a limited track record with which to pull in partners for both face-to-face meetings as well as a sit-down dinner. Lastly, all meetings were taking place at a specific Business Lounge, which had limited space combined with high demand from companies.
“The Dinner and the Business meetings were top-notch and well vetted – matching our companies with tangible potential partners. Based on the initial feedback we heard from our companies as well as from the meetings, I am willing to bet this will go down as our best mission to date.”
Despite these potential challenges, we saw multiple positive opportunities for success at the show.
The team started early, together with the client we created a targeted business outreach plan, contacting over 250 international companies for potential meetings at the show. Three months before the show we started the booking process, using technology and real-time updates we ensured an open and direct communication. Finally, TPG created a master briefing book for the client, which included background information on each of the meeting partner companies.
During the show, as the Business Lounge was often crowded and hectic, TPG maintained a constant presence in the venue to ensure face-to-face introductions and timely transitions between meetings. As needed, we also joined in meetings to provide business development support and negotiation assistance. We were also able to quickly reschedule missed or late appointments, resulting in a single no-show from a meeting partner, and only two missed appointments by developers.
By working side-by-side with the client during the whole process, TPG was able to provide a smooth and productive conference, achieving results way above expected.
53 one-on-one meetings took place with 28 meeting partner companies, far exceeding the original goals.
30 percent increase in the quality appointments from previous year.
Sit-down dinner included 12 business partners from 9 companies, including Gamers Gate, Pacific Links, G5 Entertainment, IGT, Nickelodeon, and National Geographic.
The development teams were (and continue to be) incredibly willing and eager to work with TPG to further their business development efforts, and multiple work-for-hire and publishing deals have been negotiated as a result of this project.
As a result, the client has contracted The Powell Group work with their teams for the 2015 Game Developers Conference as a result of our success and their trust in our work.
