The Video Game Consultancy where your game gets the treatment that it deserves!.
The Powell Group is a dedicated team of video game consultants that help your company and game reach its potential.
The client is an independent games studio based in Winnipeg, Canada. They are a small team that considers themselves a creative company rather than a traditional game company. In the past, they have done work involving interactive media, film, arts and even research projects and literature. Their latest venture is an iOS and Android game, a tower defense title with elements of augmented reality (AR), from now referred as the game.
When the client requested our help, we identified a number of factors that could impact the success of their project. The client is relatively new to the gaming industry; while their lead engineer has released a title, this was not the case for the majority of the team. In addition, when we came onboard, it was rather late in the game’s development. We determined that there were four crucial elements of their process for which we could provide significant value:
QA The game needed to be tested on two different platforms – iOS and Android. We understood the budgetary restrictions as well as the need to work with a team based in Canada and began investigating options for QA firms. We managed all the due diligence process. Once all the information was gathered, we delivered a proposal to the client, who decided on the company to be contracted. The QA team reported to TPG daily. Depending on the severity of the issues found, we would contact the QA team to provide clarification to the client. During this process, some hard decisions were made: some issues required re-work on game completed elements, while others forced us to reconsider device choices..
Localization – The client needed to localize their English game into Canadian French. However, a challenge that often occurs during the process is the moving target that is a finalized script. Time always becomes an issue. As we did with QA, we performed the same chain of command, allowing us to deliver a proposal on the teams that we found. In addition to identifying and managing the team, we also managed the client expectations of the process and goals of localization.
PR and Marketing – The client wanted to position their game as a unique and engaging title through obtaining reviews from iOS and Android websites, as well as generate awareness of the company. We put together a proposal that recommended influential videogame conferences and events where they could present the game directly, allowing the client to build interest and feel out questions. For marketing, we tapped an experienced PR lead based in San Francisco, who put together a plan for reviews and team interviews, identifying key targets in the games and tech media who would be a good fit for the title. She presented the game to over to 75 outlets through distribution of a press release and the offer of a review.
Onboarding – The client wanted us to analyze the game as it existed at that time and help direct the onboarding experience for a new player. As the development team was still creating content and updating builds on a daily basis, we would give feedback on aspects of each build. Each level of feedback would cover new elements that should be added, and offer opportunities within the current content to rearrange aspects that would enable players to learn and enjoy the title. Through this feedback, we also provided general game feedback that led to changes in the overall appearance of the game.
Additionally, while providing feedback on each build, we also critiqued their script. The script required alterations that would match the changes made to the game.
The Powell Group successfully completed the initiatives for which we were engaged by the client. We were able to systematically complete QA, Localization, PR and Marketing, and Onboarding in a timely manner that allowed the development team to stay focused on their goals and working together. As a combined team we were able to successfully launch the game into the mobile marketplace.
